Llama and Alpaca Industry Overview
Llamas and Alpacas are the basis of an exciting new industry that is developing worldwide. Although most llamas and alpacas are in South America, there are now enough of them in Canada, the United States, and several other countries that new herds are being developed. Raising llamas and alpacas is ENJOYABLE. Native South Americans call them their SPEECHLESS FRIENDS. You will understand why once you spend some time with these animals, and experience their ease of handling and management, and their delightfully gentle, charming and curious personalities.
At the same time, raising llamas and alpacas is PROFITABLE. Although it is obviously impossible to guarantee the ultimate success of any investment, materials published by the Alpaca Owners and Breeders Association illustrate significant annual returns in a breeding business. Recognizing that the agricultural base for these animals is primarily their fibre (the coat they grow and which is shorn like sheep), profits are also available in the sales of raw fibre, processed fibre, and finished garments. In addition, llamas are being used in a growing recreational and commercial packing/hiking industry. It is for these reasons that llamas and alpacas are called the WORLD'S FINEST LIVESTOCK INVESTMENT.
This industry has attracted traditional farmers and people new to farming. Herd size varies from hundreds of animals raised over several years, to people starting with just a few.
